The 8th Annual Longhorn Stampede 5k was held on Saturday morning in Jones, OK. Beautiful weather greeted the runners as they prepared for the race. Families gathered to cheer on the children and teachers in the 1-mile fun run, and 61 runners endured the grueling 3+ mile course for the 5k. Participants in the 5k came from all over the state, representing Edmond, Luther, Newalla, Choctaw, Oklahoma City, El Reno, and Jones.

All proceeds from this event benefited classroom technology for Jones High School. Over $8,000 was raised, and the school will be able to purchase 40 new Chromebooks.

Cheryl McGee and her son Nick McGee, traveled from Choctaw to join the race. She has participated in this event every year and says it is her favorite 5k. Last year, Cheryl’s hip began to fail in the middle of the Longhorn Stampede. She struggled to finish, but said a Jones Police officer followed her in his car cheering her on to the finish line. Cheryl had a double hip-replacement surgery in January, and she used this race as the focal-point of her recovery.
