Longhorns Open Up District Play With a 42-29 Victory At Chandler

Jones Longhorns Sophomore Quarterback Carson May connected with Junior Wideout Elijah Reed for 3 scores, and Junior Running back Korbin Cox rushed for two TDs on the night as the Longhorns moved to 1-0 in district play with a 42-29 victory over the Chandler Lions.

The Lions proved to be a solid test for the Longhorn defense, putting up scores in all 4 quarters, including the opening drive of the game. But the Longhorns always had an answer. After the Lions opening score, the Longhorns got on the board fast with 74-yard touchdown run by Junior Wide Receiver Tye Tucker. In the end, the quick-strike Jones offense and a few key 4th down stops by the Jones defense proved to be the difference in the game.

Head Coach Dave Martin Spoke of the resilience of the team, “The kids have a great response in the way they come and play. They don’t get their head down. They are going to go out and respond to adverse situations. They keep playing.” That resilience was on full display on Friday night in Lincoln County.

With a 1-0 record in district play, the Longhorns can now look forward to a Homecoming match-up with the Meeker Bulldogs. Coach Martin always emphasizes the necessity of improving each week, when asked about his goals for the next week, he said the team needs to “regroup and heal-up.”

The Jones Longhorns will take on the Meeker Bulldogs for Homecoming on Friday October 4, 2019 at 7:00 at Tim Wallace Memorial Stadium.
