Longhorns Top Lexington 52-43. Earn a Spot in Area Play Next Week

The Jones Longhorns overpowered the Lexington Bulldogs 52-43 in an elimination game Saturday afternoon. The win secures the Longhorns a spot in the Area games next week. The Horns will clash with the loser of the Crossings Christian/Hugo game next Thursday evening.

The Longhorns had their hands full with a senior-laden Bulldog squad Saturday afternoon. Coach Derek Verner commented, “they had nine seniors, we knew they were going to fight tooth and nail, because they don’t want their high school career to end.”

The Longhorns were in control for most of the game, and while the Bulldogs would get close multiple times throughout the second half, the Longhorns always managed to find a way to stretch the lead. “I told them we have to dig in, settle down, relax, do what we do best, take care of the ball, don’t get frustrated, take a breath and play smart.”

The Longhorns know the road only gets tougher from here. By late Saturday evening the Coaching Staff and team will know their opponent for the next week. Regardless of the outcome of the Crossings/Hugo game, Coach Verner and the Longhorns know a top-15 team will be waiting in the wings. The Longhorns will practice hard, watch film, and try to extend the season again.
