Longhorns Roll Bronchos 31-7 on the Road

The Jones Longhorns (1-0) passed their first major test of the of the 2020 season with a 31-7 victory over the Bethany Bronchos (0-1).

The Bronchos are staple in class 4A, making the State Title game as recently as 2018. Bethany has been tremendous in the regular season over the last few years, last losing a regular season game 693 days ago back in October of 2018. The Bronchos are strong at home, playing in the Home Stadium of Southern Nazarene University.

However, the Longhorns were able to overcome each of those obstacles on the arm and feet of Junior Quarterback Carson May and a strong showing from the defense to take down the Bronchos.

The game got off to a strange start when Bethany attempted an onside kick on the opening kickoff. Jones recovered and were able to convert on an early Zack Knox field goal to go up 3-0. Head Coach Dave Martin hinted in the preseason that his Quarterback progressed on his footwork in the off season, which was on full display Friday evening, with May getting in the end zone for the Longhorns first touchdown of the night.

Things got interesting after halftime as the Bronchos were able to march down the field quickly to narrow the score to 10-7. The Longhorns responded with a touchdown drive that last almost five minutes that was extremely heavy with runs from May, capped off by a TD run by Senior Running Back Korbin Cox.

The Bronchos were able to make a few other drives into Longhorn territory, but were never able to find the scoreboard again. This ultimately was the difference in the game.

The Longhorns cannot get too comfortable, as another traditional powerhouse is looming. Jones will be on the road again next week with a clash with defending 3A Champion Lincoln Christian in Tulsa.
