Longhorns Top Lions 50-12

Carson May was tremendous, Emmett Murphy was the model of efficiency and young Chace Pitts had the game of his young career as the Jones Longhorns (1-2) topped the Luther Lions (0-2) 50-12. This was the third time the Eastern Oklahoma County teams have met in the last 366 days, and the result for game three was very similar to the first two.

The Longhorns received the opening kick and scored 5 plays later when Carson May found Emmett Murphy on a 50-yard pass. The Lions turned around and marched the ball down the field on a 13 play drive that culminated in a touchdown, it looked like the fans might be in store for a shootout. But the Longhorns took care of those notions quickly.

Jones scored again 90 seconds later on another May to Murphy connection, this time for 45-yards. The Lions went three-and-out including a 9 yard loss on 3rd down. A bad snap on the punt gave Jones the ball on the Lion 13 yard line. One play later May connected with Luke Huckaby to give the Horns a 20-6 lead at the end of the 1st.

On the first play of the 2nd Quarter May found Murphy again for a 25-yard score. It is really hard to emphasize the impact that Emmett Murphy had on this game. His efficient performance of 3 catches, 123 yards and 3 Touchdowns in the first Half truly separated the Longhorns from the Lions. The Longhorns would add another 2 points on a safety during a Luther punt attempt. Luther would find the end zone one more time before the half.

With about 5 minutes left until halftime, May handed the ball the Freshman Chace Pitts who took the ball 46 yards for the Touchdown. It would be the first of two scores for the freshman. When asked about his breakout performance, Pitts simply replied, “I had some really good blockers.” Carden Karl added another Touchdown late in the 1st Half.

At the end of the evening Carson May finished 13-18, 289 yards and 5 Touchdowns. While the Horns were favored to win the contest, it was a relief for the Horns to finally get a win on the season. It can be easy to forget that this Luther team made it to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs last year. The all-around effort by the Longhorns was a welcome site for the Packed visitors stands at the Luther Football stadium.

The Horns will have a Bye week next week. The team will be on the road again on September 23 against the Star Spencer Bobcats.
