Longhorns Tame Lions 35-28, Will Travel to Washington Next Week

Carson May accounted for 5 total TDs and the Jones Longhorns withstood a furious 4th Quarter flurry as the Longhorns beat Luther for the second time this year.

“You’ve got to respond to the adversity in playoff time.” Coach Martin said after the win. It seemed multiple times throughout the game that Jones might pull away, but Luther consistently found ways to stay in the game, especially in the 4th Quarter.

“You just have to be the best team in the stadium each week, you don’t have to beat every team in the bracket tonight, you just have to find a way to win each week, and if you can do that, you’re in pretty good shape.”

The Longhorns found their footing through the arm and legs of Carson May. The Senior QB was sensational in the first round of the playoffs, completing 86% of his passes with 3 TDs thought the air and two on the ground.

The game started slowly for both squads as no points were scored in the first. Jones got on the scoreboard on a one yard QB sneak by May with 5 minutes left until halftime. Luther had a promising next drive that made it all the way down the Longhorn 11 yard line, but the Field Goal attempt was no good. On the very next play Carson May found Emmett Murphy wide open for an 80 yard Touchdown reception. Jones would carry the 14-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the 3rd Luther was finally able to get on the board on a 33 yard Touchdown from Braden Browning to Daviion Wychoff. Jones answered with a 7 play, 60 yard drive capped off by receiving touchdown by Mason Weiher, giving the Horns a 21-7 advantage. Luther would fumble on the ensuing drive, and on the next play May would connect with Cadyn Karl on a 15 yard score. It would be the second one-play drive for Jones on the evening. This put Jones up 28-7 heading to the 4th.

The Lions put up a strong fight in the 4th. After a Braiden Martin punt was downed inside the 10 yard line, Browning connected with Wychoff for a 95 yard TD. After an unsuccessful drive, Luther again found the end-zone on a Browning pass to Owen Wilson. This left the the score 28-21 with 5:27 on the clock. The Longhorns embarked on an 8 play, 60 yard drive that took almost 4 minutes off the clock. May was 3-3 for 20 yards on the drive to go with 5 rushes for 42 yards, including a 13 yard TD run. Luther was able to score on 4th down attempt late in the 4th that bounced off the hands of a Jones defended, but the onside kick was recovered by the sure-handed Karl, and the Longhorns were able to kneel and put the game away.

“Give credit to (Luther), they played hard tonight.” Coach Martin said after the game. Daviion Wychoff was fantastic for the Lions, finished with 202 yards and 3 TDs on 5 receptions. The Lions season will end at the hands of Jones for the second year in a row.

Jones will travel Washington to face a undefeated Warrior team that is considered by many to be the favorite to win the Gold Ball in Class 2A.
